Korean media: The industry expects Lee Jae-yong to become chairman of Samsung Group

According to the Yonhap News Agency, industry insiders said that more and more people are speculating about when Samsung’s vice chairman Lee Jae-yong will become Samsung’s chairman after the death of Samsung’s chairman Lee Kin-hee.

Lee Kin-hee passed away in Seoul Samsung Hospital on October 25, at the age of 78. In May 2014, 72-year-old Lee Kin-hee was admitted to the hospital for a sudden myocardial infarction and has been in a coma ever since. Since then, Lee Kin-hee's only son, Lee Jae-yong, has been leading Samsung.

In 2018, the Korea Fair Trade Commission named Lee Jae-yong as the head of Samsung Group. However, Lee Jae-yong, 52, has not yet taken over the title of chairman of Samsung.

Earlier this month, Chung Euisun, the heir of Hyundai Motor Group, was promoted to chairman, and Lee Jae-yong became the only president of Korea's four major conglomerates without the title of chairman.

An executive from a South Korean conglomerate who asked not to be named said: “Lee Jae-yong seems to have always believed that it is inappropriate to let him serve as chairman while his father is still alive. Since Lee Jae-yong has been recognized as Samsung’s The actual leader, he may not have much interest in fighting for the title of chairman."

Samsung has always stated that it has not discussed Lee Jae-yong's promotion, but after his father's death, industry insiders speculate that the group will soon begin to review this issue.

Some observers said that Lee Jae-yong is unlikely to be promoted for the time being, because some of the scrutiny he faces may put him in jail again.

On the afternoon of September 1, 2020, the Central District Prosecutor's Office of Seoul, South Korea announced that it had filed a non-detention prosecution against Samsung Electronics Vice President Lee Jae-yong on the grounds of suspected illegal inheritance of business rights. On September 18th, the Supreme Court of South Korea (the Supreme Court) rejected the special prosecution team's application for recusal of the trial judge in the case of Lee Jae-yong, Samsung Electronics' vice chairman Lee Jae-yong. Regarding the reasons for rejection, the court stated that there is no objective and reasonable evidence to prove that the judge may make an unfair and unfair judgment.
